The Over-35s Ladies ‘Touchboks’ earned Bronze at the Federation of International Touch World Cup in Nottingham, UK.

Nottingham, United Kingdom (23 July 2024)—The South African Women’s Touch Rugby team has made South Africa proud, earning bronze at the Touch Rugby World Cup in Nottingham, England. The over-35s team earned a first-ever for South Africa.

“They have worked so hard and are so driven, and I feel the country needs to hear their story” – Caryn van Herwaarde.

The sport is similar to other rugby formats. However, in this case, the team is made up of 14 players. Six players are on the field, and the remaining team members wait along the sidelines to be used as substitutions. Subs are unlimited and can switch into the game as needed.

The sport has minimal physical contact and is unique in that it also allows for mixed-gender teams and has a diverse age range, going up to teams in the over-55s category.

The sport has been adopted by many of the usual rugby nations, including the United Kingdom, France, Australia and New Zealand, to name a few.

The Federation of International Touch was founded to unite teams across the globe, and it plays host to events like the World Cup. This year, the World Cup ran from July 15th to July 21st, 2024. The Federation aims to build the sport internationally.

The ‘Touchboks’ as the local team is affectionately named, represented South Africa in several divisions, flying the flag high each time. You can follow the “Touch Boks” via Instagram here.

The next World Cup will be hosted in New Zealand in 2028. Until then, let’s get behind the Touchboks, support their local endeavours as they prepare for the next world cup and raise awareness for their teams.
