Amateur jockey Alice Procter has had successful surgery on a fractured spine but remains in intensive care following a heavy fall at Cartmel on Saturday.
The Injured Jockeys’ Fund (IJF) said Procter “is conscious and able to talk for short periods of time” but that there were “indications of some damage to the spinal cord”.
It added that the 21-year-old faces a “long journey” to recovery.
Procter was flown by air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital after coming down on Uggy Uggy Uggy in a female riders’ handicap hurdle.
“Alice is conscious and able to talk for short periods of time,” said an IJF statement.
“The surgery to stabilise her thoracic spinal fracture was successful, although there are indications of some damage to the spinal cord.
“Alice will remain in hospital as plans are made for her longer-term rehabilitation.”
Procter is the daughter of Doug and Lucy Procter, whose Glanvilles Stud in Dorset bred dual Champion Hurdle winner Honeysuckle.
