Faster, stronger, better: Competitions on the pitch and in the gym

Brazil’s female players do not limit their team time to training sessions and matches. Their weekends are filled with joint cinema outings, trips to the park and go carting.

“We live together. We do all together, so we are one big family,” said Brazil forward Raquel Kochhann. “This makes a difference inside of the group because we are all sisters and no one’s touching our sisters. This is what makes Brazil so strong.”

As close as they are, however, when the opportunity to beat each other comes along, the sisters can turn sinister. In a friendly way, of course, such as racing to see who is the first to get to the pitch or who is the one helping to clean up equipment after the training sessions.

“Every little thing, we are competing,” Kochhann said. “At the gym, I lift one kg more than you and then you try to do more, so we help each other to be better every time.”

Argentina’s players, who are among the top medal prospects in the men’s tournament at Paris 2024, spend most of the year together. But when it comes to testing who runs the fastest, lifts the most weights or knocks down the most pins in bowling, their competitive nature surges forth.

“We can’t lose at anything,” Joaquin Pellandini, Argentina’s back, said with a laugh. “Everything, bowling… Everything we do, we compete.”

And they are glad they do.

“Everyone wants to save his place in the team, so the competition between us is very good,” Pellandini said. “That is a key part to get better every day.”
