The Gentlemen of Aspen have had the Vail Rugby Club’s number this summer.
After Vail started the year 4-0 with impressive wins over Boulder, Grand Junction and Steamboat Springs (as well as an additional forfeit by Steamboat Springs on June 29), the local rugby club lost its first match of the year against Aspen in the 50th-annual Cowpie Classic on July 6. On Saturday, the Gentlemen got the best of their rivals again, sweeping a doubleheader at Wagner Park in Aspen.

The home team jumped out to a 28-10 first-half lead in the first game en route to a 49-24 victory. The Gentlemen of Aspen won the next match, too, 38-22.
“We are disappointed to drop the league match to Aspen on the road,” stated Vail coach Joe Lippert. “Hats off to the Gents for being the better team on the day. I was very happy with how both our squads battled and kept putting points on the board as the matches wore on, but we dug ourselves a hole in the middle of both matches that was too much to recover from.”

Lippert said Vail has experienced a number of injuries in the past month. It has made putting the club’s best team out on the pitch a challenge, he said. This weekend, the Vail Rugby Club will host the Ski Town Classic rugby tournament, which rotates locations each year. Lippert’s squad ends the season with a rematch against Aspen on Aug. 3 at home. The team’s first-year coach is looking forward to an opportunity to flip the script to end the summer.

“We are excited to welcome other mountain teams to Vail this Saturday,” Lippert said. “The next couple weeks we’ll focus on tightening up our defensive support and timing in attack. Two weeks at home is something we want to embrace and step up for.”
