Ray Reardon, the six-times world snooker champion fondly known as “Dracula” for his distinctive widow’s peak hairline and prominent front teeth, has died at the age of 91.

The Welshman, who ruled snooker in the 1970s and later mentored Ronnie O’Sullivan, died on Friday evening after previously being diagnosed with cancer, his wife, Carol, said.

Leading the outpouring of warm tributes, Mark Williams, the three-times world champion, who was born just six miles from Reardon’s coal mining community in Tredegar, said: “Ray is one of the best sports people ever from Wales and the best snooker player. He’s one of the reasons why a lot of us started playing.

“He put snooker on the map, alongside Alex Higgins, Jimmy White and Steve Davis. Anyone playing
