WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A former Wichita State University assistant tennis coach faces several counts on charges of child sex crimes. Max Wheeler appeared in Sedgwick County District Court Monday, where a judge set his bond at $250,000.

Charges against Wheeler include three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, one count of indecent liberties with a child, two counts of criminal sodomy with a child, two counts of electronic solicitation, and one misdemeanor count of promoting obscenity to minors. The victim in the case is between 14 and 16, charges show.

Following Wheeler’s arrest earlier this month, a Wichita State spokesperson confirmed that he was no longer with the tennis program. The spokesperson said Wheeler worked in the athletic program in a temporary, limited position in 2023-24 but has not associated with the university since April.
